Marce l Carné is widely regarded as one of the sta ndard b earers of French q uality cinem a of the 1930s and 1940s, responsib le for suc h master pieces as Quai des bru mes (1938) and Les Enfants du Paradis (1945). H ow ironic then that, in 1958, towards the end of his f ilm-making ca reer, he sh ould make a film which dar ed to portray t he attitudes and behavi our of the 1950s youth, in a way tha t effectiv ely capture s the mood a nd sentiment of the ti me. Les Tricheurs was a hugely c ontrovers ial film , not leas t because of it s blatant depiction of adolesc ent free- love, and was even banned in some regions o f Franc e. It also received some intensely unfavour able revi ews, most n otably from the young hothe ads on the Cahiers du c inéma such as Fra n?ois Tru ffaut who cit ed this film as a prime exampl e of the decline of Fre nch cinema int o medio crity. In sp ite of all this negative pre ss, the fil m proved to be an astonis hing commerci al success, at tracting fiv e million cinema-goers, and w as awar ded the Grand Pr ix du Cinéma f ran?ais in 1958. Wh ilst Les Tric heurs is not as fla wless as Carné&a mp;#39; s earlier maste rpieces, it is nonethe less a signi ficant wo rk, hav ing the p ower to bo th shock and move its audience, whilst havi ng great en tertainment v alue. It evokes the mood of its time in a w ay that few French films of this period did, depicting you ng people as pl easure-seeki ng rebels, rej ecting t he austerity and discipli ne of the prev ious gene ration w hilst purs uing a lif e without ca res, respo nsibili ties or love. Similariti es with Jam es Dean&am p;#39;s films of the 1950s (most notably R ebel witho ut a Cause) are appare nt, altho ugh Carn é's treatm ent of young p eople is f ar more ab stract - in his film they merely s ymbolise a wo rld that h as lost its way, mor e or less vi ctims of post-w ar pros perity. A lthough t he young peop le in Les Tri cheurs lack the authent icity to be totally cred ible, th e film doe s make an importan t, and indee d quite d isturbin g point , about where the perm issive soci ety may be h eading. Much of the pleas ure of th e film is i n the performan ces from it s four lead actors, Jacque s Charri er, Pascal e Petit, Laur ent Terzief f and An dréa Parisy, a lthough onl y Terzie ff is really c onvincing in his role. Marcel Ca rné originall y considered Alain Delon a nd Jean-P aul Belm ondo for the pa rts of Bob and Alain respec tively, before optin g for Char rier and Terzieff. As a co nsolation, C arné offered Belmondo a smal ler part in the film - alas to o small for the actor to be no ticed by the public.
