He is discov ered by Vance Shaw (Randol ph Scott ), an outlaw on the run from a posse. Forced to trav el on foot aft er his horse was hurt, Sha w at first co nsiders s tealing Cr eighton 's hor se, bu t changes hi s mind and takes the man with him, saving his life. Sometime later , following h is recov ery, Cre ighton r eturns to Om aha, Nebr aska and plans t he construc tion of a telegra ph line fr om Omaha to Salt La ke City, U tah. Facin g consi derable oppositio n to the l ine from Confederate soldier s, Indians, and outlaws , Creighton e licits the hel p of his sister Sue (Virgini a Gilmore), foreman Pat Grogan (M inor Watson), and as sistant Hom er Kettle (Chi ll Wills). Look ing to put his outlaw past b ehind him, Shaw arriv es at Crei ghton&#39 ;s Western U nion of fice looking for honest wor k and is hired as a scout by Grogan who is unaware o f his past. C reighton r ecognizes him a mong the men an d allows him to sta y despite his suspicio ns. Creighton also hires t enderfoot R ichard Bla ke (Rober t Young), a Harvard-educ ated engineer as a favo r to Blake 's f ather. Shaw and Blake are both attract ed to Sue and vie for her attention, but their ro mantic rivalry is cut short w hen const ruction of the telegraph li ne start s on July 4, 1861. Af ter work c ommences o n the li ne, one of the men is killed apparently by a myst erious band of cattle-rust ling Indians. Unconvinced that Indians are to blame , Shaw rides out to investigate an d follows the rustle rs& #39; trail to t he camp o f Jack Slad e, a form er friend and c ohort, whose g ang commi tted the killing d isguise d as Indian s—the gang S haw left foll owing h is last bank r obbery. Sl ade reveal s that t hey are working for the Confed eracy t o disrupt Western Union because they believe t he telegr aph servic e will help the Union. S haw rides aw ay and returns to the line. No t wanting to turn in his former friend s, Shaw tells Crei ghton that a large ban d of Dakota In dians s tole th e cattle, and rec ommends that they sim ply replace th e herd and no t risk a fight with t he Indians. S ometime later, a confron tation takes place bet ween men work ing on the forw ard line and a band of drunken I ndians. When one of the India ns tries to ste al some equip ment, a nerv ous Blake shoot s him, ignoring S haw& #39;s order to remain calm. A fter wo rd arri ves that the main camp is under attack by other Indians , the Western Union men ru sh back to he lp with the defe nse. At the mai n camp, S lade&am p;#39;s men, who a re again disguise d as Indian s, steal the Weste rn Union h orses. The company di scover the r use when o ne of the wounded I ndians turns out to be a wh ite man. Forced to buy back their st olen hors es from Sla de, Cr eighton becomes sus picious o f Shaw& amp;#39;s involvem ent, esp ecially when he admits t o knowing the gang. S oon the U.S. Ar my arriv es and an nounces th e Indians have now refu sed to al low the telegraph lines to go through t heir territory in respon se to Blake& amp;#39;s shooting of t he drunken I ndian. Cr eighton, Shaw, and B lake ride out to convince Chief Sp otted Ho rse to allow them to buil d the li ne through Indi an terr itory, even tho ugh the man Blake wound ed was Spotted Horse&a mp;#39;s son. C reighton is finally a ble to pers uade the Indian s to allow them passage, and wor k conti nues unt il the compan y appro aches Salt La ke City . Sometime lat er, Sha w receives w ord that Jack Slade wants to meet with him. On the way to see Slade, S haw is captur ed and b ound by Slade' s men. Slad e says his g roup is going to burn down th e Wester n Union cam p and t hey don& ;#39;t wan t Shaw to interfere. Aft er Slade and his men ride of f, Sha w escapes from his ropes but arrives back too late t o prevent the fire. He helps rescu e some of the Weste rn Union men from the fla mes and burns h is hands in the proce ss. After the f ire, Creig hton confro nts Shaw for an explanation, but Shaw d oes not reveal w hat he kno ws and is fired by Creigh ton. As Shaw leav es the camp, he tells Bl ake that Slade is actually Sha w's bro ther an d that he, Shaw, w ill find Slade& ;#39;s gang and st op them from interf ering w ith the te legraph projec t. Shaw rides off and fi nds Slade and his men in a nearby town. At the barber shop, S haw conf ronts his brot her, whose gu n is co ncealed u nder the barb er&#39 ;s sheet . Slade shoots Shaw through t he sheet. Shaw fights bac k in sp ite of his wound, ki lling some of the gang m embers, and then dies. Blake arrives and cont inues t he fight with Slade who dies from his wound s. Soon after, the Wes tern Union lin e is co mpleted and t he worker s celebrate . When Sue lame nts the absence of Sha w, Creighton tells h er that Shaw can hear them.详情
