Second-year UGAS student Aoi Sogawa won the poster award at the 29th annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Plant Microbe Interactions, September 18–20, 2019, at Sunport Hall Takamatsu, Takamatsu, Kagawa.
The aim of the society is to promote the field of plant–microbe interactions by bringing researchers together at an annual meeting held in Japan. The society also aims to promote international activities by requesting all members provide both Japanese and English abstracts at the meeting.
The award was for ‘Functional analysis of Lotus japonicus Qa-SNARE gene LjSYP132’. In this study, Aoi and his colleagues reported that SNARE proteins, which are involved in the biological interaction between legumes (L. japonicus, a forage crop like clover) and rhizobia (soil bacteria that convert nitrogen to ammonia), are selectively spliced, and production of the protein is regulated (via the gene) over time.
