Compulsory Use of Laptop Computers
To all students admitted in 2022
Ehime University offers lectures using personal computers in the “Introduction to Information Literacy” course for first-year students, as well as lectures using various e-learning materials, distance learning classes, writing reports and papers, registering for classes, checking grades, and receiving communications from and asking questions of faculty members. There are many opportunities to use computers and the Internet. In addition, becoming proficient in various software such as Microsoft Office through these uses will be indispensable for your future social life.
In light of this, we have made it mandatory for new students to carry a laptop computer for personal use starting in 2021. Since the computers may be used in class, please be prepared to bring them with you when instructed to do so by a faculty member.
1. Purpose
The mandatory use of laptop computers will be implemented for the following purposes
(1) “Introduction to Information Literacy”, e-learning courses and distance lectures
(2) Support for computerization of various services within the university, etc.
(3) Maintain security of the campus network
2. Implementation details
Ehime University will promote the following
(1) Enhance classes utilizing computers.
(2) Promote the computerization of various services within the university.
(3) Students who cannot afford to purchase a computer for financial reasons may borrow a computer.
(iv) A blanket agreement for application software (Microsoft 365) to assist students, faculty, and staff of the University to use Microsoft Office and other software free of charge.
3. Requirements for laptop computers to be prepared prior to enrollment (for students enrolling in the 2022 academic year)
Software Requirements
(1) OS must be either Windows or macOS, and must be within the support expiration date at the time of enrollment.

(2) The following applications must be installable and operational
Latest version of Microsoft Office
(Microsoft Office is not required to be installed on owned or newly purchased computers.)
(3) For Mac, antivirus software must be installed and running.
Hardware Requirements
- (1) Wi-Fi connection must be available.
- (2) A keyboard shall be provided.
- (3) A camera and microphone must be built-in, or a separate web camera and microphone must be connected.
- (4) Battery life should be about 10 hours.
Please prepare a laptop computer that meets the above requirements.
If you already have a laptop computer, you do not need to purchase a new one at the time of enrollment if you meet the above requirements.
However, if you feel that the performance is insufficient for your needs, please consider purchasing a new one.

*The School of Engineering recommends a model with 16GB or even 8GB of memory capacity that can be expanded, as second-year students and above are required to attend lectures that require large amounts of data and calculations, such as lectures using CAD software and data analysis software.
Licensing of Microsoft Windows and Office
The University has a comprehensive license agreement with Microsoft Corporation.
Under this agreement, students may install the following software, free of charge, after enrollment
(1) Upgrade Windows OS and MacOS

4. For those who have difficulty providing a laptop computer due to financial circumstances
- Students who are unable to own a laptop computer due to financial circumstances may borrow a Windows laptop computer from the University for one year free of charge if they wish. (Extension is possible upon application.)
- Loans are available only to those who have applied for an entrance fee waiver (those who are candidates for or are in the process of applying for the JASSO scholarship, and those who plan to apply for the scholarship after admission). Applicants should contact the office of the faculty they wish to enter by e-mail.
5. Preparation required after the purchase of a laptop computer and prior to enrollment
After purchasing a notebook computer, please be sure to start it up once to check for any initial defects (e.g., no power, no display, no keyboard response, etc.). If you have purchased a new notebook computer, it may be necessary to perform initial setup upon first startup. In this case, please refer to the initial setup manual that comes with the computer and perform the initial setup. If the initial setup manual is not included, please refer to the following website.
