Institute for International Relations

The Institute for International Relations is based on Ehime University’s Basic Strategy for International Relations ((1) Develop human resources who can work with people around the world, (2) Build international networks in academic research, (3) Address global issues through industry-government-academia collaboration, and (4) Develop and enhance the international exchange environment on campus). The Center has established a flexible international exchange system in response to the status of international exchange and the needs of various organizations inside and outside Ehime University, and is working to play a key role in promoting internationalization in the fields of education, research, and social contribution. Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Ehime University

In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Ehime University, a commemorative event was held on November 11, 2009, the anniversary of the university’s opening. The commemorative ceremony included the announcement and award presentation of the 60th anniversary logo, which had been solicited from the public, and a commemorative lecture by Mr. Yukichi Amano, Honorary Director of the Matsuyama Shiki Memorial Museum. In addition, an opening ceremony and preview of the museum were held, followed by a commemorative celebration at the ANA Matsuyama Hotel with many guests in attendance.

Opening of Ehime University Museum

The Ehime University Museum opened in November 2009 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the university’s founding as a facility that provides the community with free access to Ehime University’s research results and materials. The museum has a wide variety of research materials such as insects, rocks, minerals, and earthenware collected in the course of research activities in various fields, and the exhibition space is designed to allow visitors to view these materials in an easy-to-understand manner. In addition to special exhibitions on topical contemporary and historical themes, museum lectures on the contents of the exhibits are also held as needed. (Opened in November 2009)

Signed a comprehensive exchange agreement with Matsuyama University on education and research exchange

In March 2010, Ehime University and Matsuyama University signed a comprehensive exchange agreement to promote cooperation between the two universities and to effectively utilize the educational and research resources of both universities, with the aim of further upgrading the level of education and research, promoting human resource development required by the region, and contributing to society as the “Knowledge Hub of Ehime Prefecture. The agreement was concluded with the aim of contributing to society.

Office for Educational Planning And Research, Organization of Educational Advancement and Student Support was approved as “Joint-use Center for Educational Resources (Center for Faculty and Staff Capacity Building)”.

Since its establishment in 2007, the Office for Educational Planning And Research of the Organization for Education and Student Support has been pushing forward educational reforms at Ehime University and promoting faculty and staff capacity development to raise the level of higher education in the Shikoku region through cooperation among universities and between faculty and staff by creating a network (SPOD) with higher education institutions throughout the Shikoku region. The network has been recognized for its achievements and has been awarded a number of prizes for its educational activities. In recognition of its achievements, SPOD was accredited as an “Education-Related Inter-Use Center (Center for Faculty Capacity Development)” under Article 143-2 of the School Education Law Enforcement Regulations (accreditation period: 5 years from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2015).

Establishment of Comprehensive Pediatric Medical Center

The Comprehensive Pediatric Medical Center was established at the School of Medicine as a specialized pediatric surgical facility that can provide advanced treatment for diseases unique to children. At the center, physicians with specialized knowledge and skills for the peculiarities of childhood and nurses with extensive experience in pediatric nursing practice provide meticulous pediatric care.

Establishment of the Center for Women’s Future Development “Supporting the Promotion of Gender Equality and the Development and Advancement of Diverse Human Resources”

The Center for Women’s Future Development is working to improve the environment for the success of female researchers, foster the next generation, increase the number of female faculty members, and promote the appointment of female faculty members to higher positions.
In addition, by promoting awareness-raising for gender equality, the Center is working to create an environment that promotes the success of diverse human resources, supports career paths for female students, and supports female junior and senior high school students in choosing science-related careers in order to nurture the next generation. In addition, we are developing projects in cooperation and collaboration with five Shikoku national universities and the local community in the promotion of diversity and gender equality. Establishment of the Center for Teaching and Learning

The Center for Teaching and Learning supports students who wish to obtain a teaching license, and plans and coordinates training programs for school teachers in the local community. Ehime University has been making university-wide efforts to nurture high-quality teachers by formulating the “Diploma Policy for Ehime University’s Teaching Curriculum” and introducing a teacher coordinator system, etc. The Center promotes these efforts, formulates teacher training curricula, formulates guidelines for teaching instruction, plans teacher license renewal courses, and coordinates with boards of education and school sites. Establishment of the Organization for the Promotion of Advanced Research and Science

The Organization for the Promotion of Advanced Research and Academia was established to promote world-class advanced research in distinctive fields in line with Ehime University’s philosophy and goals, and to contribute to the promotion of academic research at Ehime University by developing research strategies and concrete measures aimed at enhancing the academic infrastructure of the university as a whole. The organization has been reorganized as the “Organization for the Promotion of Advanced Research and Academia” to oversee the academic-related organizations that were previously divided into the Advanced Research Promotion Support Organization and the Academic Research Council, and research coordinators have been assigned to each department and organization to promote advanced research and enhance the academic infrastructure across department and organization boundaries. The new organization was established in April, 2011. (Established in April 2011)

Community Medical Support Center established

The Community Medical Support Center was established at the School of Medicine Hospital with the aim of securing and retaining physicians engaged in community medicine and alleviating the shortage of physicians in Ehime Prefecture. The Center will support the career development of young physicians and accurately identify the needs of local medical institutions and residents, and assign appropriate physicians based on an understanding of their respective realities. Through the use of networks with related institutions and the strengthening of student training and clinical training functions, the center will promote the training of physicians who will play a leading role in regional medical care.

In 2009, Ehime University was selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) as a center for basic technology development, demonstration and human resource development for plant factories. Subsequently, with the aim of further promoting plant factory research, the above two centers were merged to establish the Plant Factory Research Center. (Established in April 2012)

Establishment of SUIJI Promotion Office, Ehime University

The SUIJI Promotion Office was established to promote educational and research exchange through the Six-University Initiative Japan-Indonesia (SUIJI)* consortium on tropical agriculture, and to appropriately implement and promote the initiatives of the Strengthening Global Development Capability Project. (Established in November 2012). (Established in November, 2012)
*The Consortium was established to promote agricultural development and conservation of natural resources in tropical regions and thereby contribute to global environmental issues through organic collaboration among the education and research centers of six universities: Gadjah Mada University, Bogor Agricultural University, Hasanuddin University (all in the Republic of Indonesia), Ehime University, Kagawa University, and Kochi University. The consortium was formed in March 2011 with the aim of contributing to the development of agriculture and conservation of natural resources in the tropics, thereby contributing to global environmental issues.

School of Medicine Hospital Outpatient Wing Renovated

In March 2013, the renovation of the outpatient wing of the School of Medicine Hospital was completed, based on the concepts of 1) a relaxing waiting area, 2) shared use of examination rooms, treatment rooms, and the reception wing by the departments, and 3) secure flow lines between patients and staff from the patient’s perspective.

Establishment of Nishiura Station, Nanyo Fisheries Research Center

Nishiura Station was established as a new activity center of Nanyo Fishery Research Center in Umiraiku Aminami (Aminamachi Regional Industry Research and Extension Center), which was developed by Aminamachi. (Established in April 2013)
Umirayiku Aminami is a building utilizing Nishiura Elementary School, which was closed in March 2011. The first floor is equipped with long-term and short-term accommodations, and the second floor houses the Umirayiku kitchen for Aminamachi’s fish food education and a university laboratory. As a remote center, it is equipped with a videoconferencing system and is used for educational and research activities with Ehime University and other universities.

Establishment of the Advanced High Pressure Science Research Center

The Center for Advanced High Pressure Science and Technology (CAXS), as a Joint Usage/Collaborative Research Center (a facility accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a center that can be used jointly by researchers across Japan beyond the boundaries of universities), will conduct interdisciplinary joint research in the fields of earth and planetary science, physics, chemistry, materials science, life science, etc. using high pressure, with the Research Center for Deep Earth Dynamics of Ehime University at its core. The center was established to conduct interdisciplinary joint research in the fields of Earth and Planetary Science, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Life Science, etc., and to promote advanced scientific research under very high pressure by making it available to university faculty and other persons engaged in research in the same fields as the research for which the center is established (established in June 2013). Comprehensive Medical Support Center established

In order to realize “the provision of seamless, safe and reliable medical care,” the Center for Comprehensive Medical Support was established at the School of Medicine. At this center, we look at the life of patients from before hospitalization to after discharge, and practice support for their unique way of life. We aim to provide comprehensive solutions to patients’ problems, including economic and social circumstances other than their illnesses, in collaboration with doctors, nurses, psychologists, mediators, and other specialists from various fields.

Surgical Techniques Training Center established.

The Surgical Techniques Training Center was established at the School of Medicine to provide training for physicians both on and off campus, to contribute to the improvement of surgical techniques, to improve medical safety through the improvement of surgical techniques, and to contribute to the welfare of the citizens of the prefecture and, by extension, of the nation. The center provides training using human remains, which enables not only the education of young doctors in surgical techniques, but also the development of new surgical techniques by veteran doctors.

Artificial Joint Center established

The Artificial Joint Center was established at the School of Medicine with the concept of “providing better artificial joints to more patients. The Center’s main feature is an “integrated clinical, research, and educational center” consisting of four divisions: the Clinical Division, the Research and Development Division, the Surgical Education Division, and the Osteoscience Division. Our goal is to provide advanced artificial joint medical care to as many patients as possible, so that they can be free from joint pain and return to a comfortable daily life.

Hospital Park is developed

A promenade in front of the School of Medicine Hospital has been developed to create “Hospital Park,” a place where visitors to the hospital can be pleasantly entertained. The purpose of this development was to provide the hospital with a beautiful landscape that offers comfort to visitors to the hospital as well as to provide the hospital with a stature as a core facility related to the medical care of the people of the prefecture. The hospital also values its connection with the local community, and in addition to being a clean and open space, it is expected to be a place where people can feel rest, harmony, and healing.

Establishment of endowed chair “Urban Design Research Division

This is an endowed course by the Matsuyama City Urban Renewal Council, which is engaged in not only research and study on various issues facing the central area of Matsuyama City, but also practical implementation of specific urban development projects.
This division is responsible for the operation of the Matsuyama Urban Design Center (UDCM), a collaboration of the public, private, and academic sectors, and its primary objective is to promote practical research related to urban development activities that is unparalleled in Japan.
In addition to research and practice of urban development, we also aim to develop many human resources who will be responsible for urban development, and we are building an educational system for this purpose.

Establishment of Paper Industry Innovation Center

Ehime University has established community-based research centers throughout the prefecture to fulfill its “core regional functions” and to develop activities in education, research, and social contribution. The Paper Industry Innovation Center was established in Shikokuchuo City (established in April 2014) as a research center specializing in regional industries with the aim of promoting the paper industry and revitalizing local communities through interdisciplinary research and education on the paper industry. For the expansion of the center’s functions and further development, a new building of this center was established on the same site in March, 2008.

Establishment of Regional Co-Creation Consortium

The Regional Co-Creation Consortium was established to promote the development of human resources who can revitalize regional industries and create regional innovation, and to foster human resources who can be employed and settle down in Ehime Prefecture, through the cooperation of Ehime University and related institutions in Ehime under the “Center of Knowledge Project,” the “Core Universities for Regional Development (COC+)” and the “Employment Promotion Program for Foreign Students”. The program was established for the purpose of enhancing educational programs and promoting employment and settlement in Ehime Prefecture in order to develop human resources who can revitalize local industries and create regional innovation, as well as those who are sought by the local community. Establishment of the Office of High College and University Connections

The High School-University Collaboration Promotion Office was established for the purpose of appropriately managing and implementing initiatives to promote smooth high school-university collaboration at Ehime University. The Office has concluded an “Agreement on High School-University Cooperative Education” with the Ehime Prefectural Board of Education, and is engaged in high school-university cooperative programs such as university information sessions, visiting lectures, and mock classes at high schools and other institutions. The Center for Chemical Pollution and Coastal Environmental Research was established as a Joint Usage/Collaborative Research Center (a facility accredited by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a center that can be used jointly by researchers from all over Japan beyond the boundaries of universities), utilizing the advanced research facilities, equipment and researchers’ network resources established by the Research Center for Coastal Environmental Sciences of Ehime University. The Center was established for the purpose of promoting and stimulating collaborative research in the field of environmental science, including chemical pollution research and coastal environment research in Japan by utilizing the advanced research facilities, equipment, and researcher network resources of the Center for Coastal Environmental Science, Ehime University. The Center for Regional Collaboration Saijo was established to contribute to regional industrial innovation and regional revitalization in the region, especially in the Toyo region, through broad collaboration between Ehime University and Saijo City. Adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology “Foreign Student Employment Promotion Program” for fiscal year 2017

Institute for International Relations has launched an educational program to promote understanding of Japanese companies and internships for international students seeking employment at Japanese companies. The program was initially launched in 2007 as the “Global Human Resources Development Program for Collaboration with the World” adopted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and was continued from 2011 with university budget. In FY 2009, the program was again adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as one of 12 centers in Japan, and a new “Program for Developing Highly Skilled Foreign Human Resources Nurtured by Ehime Universities and Businesses” has been developed, with more than 50 students, including Japanese students.

Social Co-Creation Contest 2017 conducted for high school students nationwide.

The Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation, through an endowed chair established by Iyo Bank, held the “Social Co-Creation Contest 2017” for high school students from all over Japan to compete for ideas, activity achievements, and research results to solve problems in local communities. This contest was held again in FY 2018 and received more applications than the previous year; it is planned to continue in FY 2019 and beyond.

Establishment of Human Rights Center

The Human Rights Center was established to ensure that all members of Ehime University are respected as individuals and can devote themselves to their studies and research, engage in their duties, and enjoy their extracurricular activities in a fair and comfortable environment.
