History of Ehime University
The following is a brief history of Ehime University from its establishment in 1949 to the present.
May 31, 1949 | The Law for Establishment of National Schools was promulgated, and Ehime University was established along with 69 other new national universities. The faculties are as follows. July 28, 1949 | The first entrance ceremony for the 1949 academic year was held, with 599 students enrolling. |
November 11, 1949 | The opening ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Faculty of Science. |
March 18, 1950 | The Emperor Showa visited Ehime University on his tour of the Shikoku region. |
October 13, 1952 | The Research Institute for Regional Society of Ehime University was established. |
April 1, 1954 | The Faculty of Agriculture was established with the transfer of Ehime’s Matsuyama Agricultural College to the national government (annual transfer based on academic year progression). At the same time, the attached research farm (Tarumi) and attached training forest (Yokoya) were also transferred. |
June 18, 1954 | A ceremony was held to mark the completion of the Daishinkan building donated to Ehime University by the Tsuda Scholarship Foundation. |




January 22, 1955 | A ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the new memorial auditorium, which was built in the Johoku district with the cooperation of the supporters’ association of the Faculty of Education and subsidized by the national treasury, based on funds donated by 88 Ehime residents living in the Los Angeles area of the United States. |

April 1, 1956 | An affiliated agricultural high school was established. |
April 1, 1958 | The Department of Engineering and the Department of Agricultural Science were established. |
October 30, 1961 | Fire broke out in the main building. The administration office, the student affairs office, the administration building of the Faculty of Education, and the social studies teaching building, totaling 5,860 square meters, were destroyed by fire. |
April 1, 1963 | The Department of Education (Music) was established. |
August 31, 1963 | Faculty of Engineering moved from Niihama City to the Johoku district of Matsuyama City. |
June 1, 1967 | The Graduate School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Agricultural Science were established. The Graduate School of Agricultural Science and the Graduate School of Engineering, with the exception of the Civil Engineering major, were abolished from the other departments. |
April 1, 1968. | With the reorganization of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Law and Letters, the Faculty of Science, and the College of Liberal Arts were established. With the expansion of the Graduate School of Engineering, Civil Engineering, the Department of Engineering was abolished. |
April 1, 1969 | The Health Administration Center was established. |
April 1, 1971 | The Waterfront Experimental Station attached to the Faculty of Science was established. |
April 1, 1972 | The Department of Science was established. The School for Disabled Children attached to the Faculty of Education was established. |

September 29, 1973 | School of Medicine was established. The former Ehime Prefectural Institute of Public Health and Ward 12 of Matsuyama Red Cross Hospital were allocated as temporary facilities for the School of Medicine. |

November 20, 1974 | School of Medicine moved from the temporary facility to Shizugawa, Shigenobu-cho, Onsen-gun, Oaza. |
May 10, 1976 | School of Medicine Hospital was established. |
April 1, 1978 | Graduate School of Science was established. |
March 31, 1979 | The Department of Science was abolished. |
April 1, 1979 | Graduate School of Medicine was established. The Department of Law in the Faculty of Law and Letters was reorganized, and the “Daytime Course”, mainly offered during the daytime, and the “Evening Course”, mainly offered in the evening, were newly established for the first time in Japan. School of Medicine established the Laboratory Animal Experimentation Facility. Facility for Controlled Agricultural Experiments and Practice attached to the Faculty of Agriculture was established. |
April 1, 1980 | The Center for Research and Guidance on Educational Practice attached to the Faculty of Education was established. |
April 1, 1981 | The Graduate School of Law was established. |
July 12, 1982 | The Information Processing Center was established. (Campus measures) |
April 1, 1983 | School of Medicine’s Laboratory Equipment Center was established. |
April 11, 1984 | The Instrumental Analysis Center was established. |
April 1, 1985 | The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (doctoral program of only three years in the second semester) was established. |




April 1, 1989 | The school emblem, school colors, and flag were established. |

December 25, 1991 | The International Student Guidance Center was established. (Internal measures) |
April 1, 1992 | The Graduate School of Engineering Doctoral Course was established. |
April 1, 1993 | The Graduate School of Education was abolished and the Graduate School of Education (Master’s Program) was established. The Information Processing Center (an intramural measure) was abolished, and the General Information Processing Center was established. With the implementation of the new curriculum (integrated undergraduate education), the Liberal Arts Program and Specialty Programs were abolished. |
June 2, 1993 | The Center for Research and Practice of University Education was established. (Internal action) |
June 24, 1994 | The Center for Community Collaboration Research was established. The Community Research Institute was abolished. |
March 31, 1996 | The Faculty of Liberal Arts was abolished. |
April 1, 1996 | The Graduate School of Science was abolished. The Graduate School of Engineering was renamed and the Graduate School of Science and Engineering was established. |
April 1, 1998 | The Graduate School of Law was abolished and the Graduate School of Law and Letters was established. Rename Graduate School of Medicine, and establish Graduate School of Medicine. Institute for Gene Research was established. |
April 1, 1999 | The Center for Coastal Environmental Science was established. |
April 1, 2000 (Heisei 12 (2000)) | The Venture Business Laboratory was established. |
April 1, 2001 | The Research Center for Deep Earth Dynamics was established. |
April 1, 2003 | Center for Cell-free Bioscience and Engineering Research was established. Center for Integrated Science Research Support was established. The Comprehensive Information Processing Center was abolished and the Comprehensive Information and Media Center was established. |
April 1, 2004 | Ehime University was incorporated and became a national university corporation, Ehime University. The Kagawa University Graduate School of Law (Shikoku Law School) (professional degree program) of Kagawa University and Ehime University was established. |

April 1, 2011 | The Advanced Research Support Organization was reorganized and renamed the Advanced Research and Academic Advancement Organization. The Intellectual Property Division was reorganized and renamed the Intellectual Property Center. The Industrial Science and Technology Support Center was renamed the Industry-Academia Collaboration Promotion Center. The Plant Factory Demonstration, Exhibition, and Training Center was established. The Social Collaboration Planning Office was established. Center for Integrated Science Research Support was established. The Academic Planning Office was established. |

April 1, 2016 | Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation was established. Research Center for Chemical Pollution and Coastal Environments was established. The Ehime University Charter was revised. |
July 1, 2016 | The Regional Collaboration Center Saijo was established. The Regional Human Resource Development Support Office was established. |
March 31, 2017 | The United Graduate School of Law (Shikoku Law School) (Professional Degree Program) of Kagawa University, Kagawa University and Ehime University has been abolished. |
April 1, 2018 | The Human Rights Center was established. The Regional Human Resource Development Support Office was renamed the Regional Human Resource Development and Recurrent Education Support Office. |
April 1, 2019 | The Office of Regional Human Resource Development and Recurrent Education Support was renamed the Center for Regional Professional Human Resource Development and Recurrent Education Support. The Center for Regional Development Research was renamed the Center for Regional Co-creation Research. Research Center for Shikoku Pilgrimage and World Pilgrimage was established. April 1, 2022 | The Graduate School of Integrated Medical and Agricultural School of Public Health was established. Joint Research Center for Proteome Interactome Analysis was established. Strategy Office established. The Office of Human Resource Development for Next Generation Science was established. |
November 1, 2022 | The Strategic Headquarters for Research Environment Management was established. |
April 1, 2023 | The Graduate School of Regional Resilience Studies was established. The Carbon Neutrality Promotion Office was established. The Office of Safety and Health Management was established. The Center for Women’s Future Development was reorganized as the Gender Equity Center. |
April 1, 2024 | The High School-University Collaboration and Connection Promotion Office, the Next Generation Science Human Resource Development Office, and the Center for Teaching and Learning were integrated and reorganized to establish the Next Generation Human Resource Development Center. The Preparatory Office for the establishment of the Town & Gown Office was established. The Future Value Creation Organization was established. The Organization for the Promotion of Advanced Research and Academia was reorganized and the Organization for the Promotion of Research and Industry-Academia Collaboration was established. The Academic Planning Office and the Social Collaboration Planning Office were merged to form the Research and Industry-Academia Collaboration Strategy Office. The Center for the Promotion of University-Industry Collaboration was renamed the Headquarters for the Promotion of University-Industry Collaboration. The Intellectual Property Center was renamed the Intellectual Property Division. The Organization for the Promotion of Social Collaboration was reorganized and the Organization for the Promotion of Regional Collaboration was established. The Regional Cooperative Planning Office was established. The Office for Educational Planning And Research, the Center for International Education, and the Asia-Africa Center were abolished due to the introduction of a field system. The Digital Information Human Resource Development Organization was established. The Digital Information Human Resource Development and Reskilling Center was established. The Digital Information Human Resource Development Planning Office was established. With the introduction of the unit system, the Center for Common Education, the Center for English Language Education, the Admissions Center, and the Student Support Center were abolished. The Institute for Advanced Research was established. The Innovation Creation Institute was established. |


Fifty Years of History of Ehime University
The 50th Anniversary of Ehime University was commemorated with the publication of “Fifty Years of History of Ehime University”. It consists of three parts: General History, Departmental History, and Documents, and covers the 50-year history of Ehime University from 1949 to the present (1999).
