On August 11 and 12, the 3rd international conference on Transdisciplinary Research on Environmental Problems in Southeast Asia (TREPSEA2018) took place in Gorontalo State University, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
TREPSEA is a biennial international conference that has been held in Indonesia since 2014. Professor Masayuki Sakakibara, Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation, is a member of the steering committee.
This year’s conference, co-hosted by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Gorontalo State University, Ehime University, Bandung Institute of Technology and Muhammadiyah Gorontalo University, had 208 participants including scientists, researchers, students and stakeholders from Indonesia, Japan, Kingdom of Lesotho, Myanmar and Vietnam. There were presentations on a wide range of environmental issues faced by Southeast Asian countries.
Professor Tetsu Sato and Associate Professor Motoko Shimagami, Faculty of Collaborative Regional Innovation, were invited to deliver keynote speeches. At the reception, Indonesian students in colorful costumes performed traditional music and dance using classical instruments.
To find solutions to environmental problems facing Southeast Asian countries, it is crucial to conduct problem-solving research which integrates arts and sciences with researchers from a variety of academic fields as well as transdisciplinary research in collaboration with the stakeholders. We hope this conference serves as a great opportunity to find innovative and transdisciplinary solutions to environmental problems in Southeast Asia and bring about meaningful research results through further cooperation and contribution.
