“Glocal collaborations between the two universities in Japan and Mozambique; Mozambique’s sustainable future of Medical Science, Food and Living, led by our academic exchanges” took place on January 24, 2018.

? The 3rd symposium of “Glocal collaborations between the two universities in Japan and Mozambique” was held at the Media Center, Ehime University, on January 24, 2018, attracting around 100 participants including company representatives and local citizens. This aims to foster relationship between Japan and Mozambique by discussing our local-oriented collaborations with Lurio University and its relevant industrial and governmental parties.

? The first part of the symposium titled “Academic exchanges between Ehime and Lurio Universities” started with opening remarks of President Yuichi Ohashi, followed by Dr. Osamu Kobayashi’s brief overview of the previous exchanges over 10 years since the two universities concluded an academic agreement in 2009.

? In the second session “Present situation of Mozambique and Lurio’s Mission,” Ms. Maura Oliveira, Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, Lurio Univerisity, delivered a keynote speech on how they have tackled a variety of problems toward the development of Mozambique.

? In the third session “Mozambique’s challenges for the improvement of Medical Science, Food and Living,” six teaching staff members from Lurio University, all of whom are studying at Ehime University to get a degree, reported on their updated research results and future vision after returning to Mozambique. Mr. Fred Nelson, a doctor’s student of Graduate School of Science and Engineering, emphasized in his presentation that he would like to bring back Japanese people’s respectful attitudes he has obtained such as “diligence” and “consideration for others.” Ms. Rosalina Tamele, a doctor’s student of United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences, explained her vision of introducing strawberry-production technique and soil-management method that she has established in Japan to her home country.

? In the following discussion session, a lot of new ideas were proposed such as setting up satellite “campuses” in each university that can provide preparatory education for those who wish to study in Japan or Mozambique by introducing its respective cultures.

? The Mozambique International Exchange Promotion Office of Ehime University will continue to support Mozambique in cooperation with the governmental organizations in both countries, and strengthen our relationships.
