Dr. Sugimoto Hiroyuki wins the Japan Wood Research Society Technology Award

Dr. Sugimoto Hiroyuki, Associate Professor of the Graduate School of Agriculture, won the Japan Wood Research Society Technology Award on January 25, 2020. The award was given in recognition of the development of a technology that dramatically enhances wood design possibility by improving the light transmission of arbitrary parts of the wood, and of the important knowledge he and his coworkers gained regarding the appearance of wood in the process.

Previously, it was thought that absorption of light in wood is important for the appearance of wood, i.e. the reflection of light, but there are many exceptions, so, it has been considered a difficult material to design. In this study, by measuring the light transmittance in wood, it was found that the light reflection of wood is strongly influenced by the light transmittance. This result opens up the possibility of further appropriate material design for wood.
